Even though it is technically still 2019, I am counting this as my first book of 2020 since reading for fun will slow down considerably once school starts back.
My book club is reading The Funeral Dress for January, and I received a copy for Christmas. I started it last night and read about 50 pages. I only put it down because it was almost midnight and I knew I needed to go to sleep! I picked it back up as soon as I woke up and did not put it down until I finished it.
The book is set in Sequatchie County, TN - just down the road from me, and the numerous references to my town along with those surrounding us was a fun addition to the book. However, even if the setting hadn't been so close to home, the story telling kept every bit of my interest. Author Susan Gregg Gilmore does an excellent job developing all of the characters as the story unfolds over 340 intriguing pages. The story of a young, single mother attempting to find her way despite difficult circumstances, The Funeral Dress weaves a tale of a diverse community finding common ground.
I am extremely excited to get to meet and chat with the author at our book club meeting later this month!
